Sitting AMEB Grade 6, 7 or 8 practical? A written co-requisite applies.

For Grade 6, 7 and 8 practical, Certificate of Performance and AMusA, AMEB sets a written co-requisite: a pass in Theory of Music, Musicianship or Music Craft at the grade shown. Practical Grades 1–5 have no written requirement, so starting theory early means the pass is ready before Grade 6 arrives.

AMEB practical examWritten co-requisite (suitable MusoLearn level)

Grade 7Grade 3 (Level 3)
Grade 8Grade 4 (Level 4)

Requirements are set by AMEB and can change. “For Leisure” subjects, such as Piano for Leisure, have no written co-requisite. Confirm the rule and its timing for your instrument and exam year in the current AMEB Manual of Syllabuses.

Music theory, made simple

A textbook cannot tell a student what they have misunderstood. MusoLearn can.

Many students do not struggle because theory is hard. They struggle because they read a chapter, do the exercises, and never find out which idea they got wrong until the exam. MusoLearn keeps it simple: one topic, one short video, one quiz, then move on.

Short enough to actually get done

Lessons run 3–7 minutes, one concept each. A lesson plus its quiz takes 10–15 minutes, so theory fits between school and dinner and stops being the thing that gets skipped.

Mistakes are caught the same day

Every quiz is marked straight away and the score sits on the dashboard. A misunderstanding about intervals gets fixed in Level 1, not discovered in the Grade 4 exam, and a parent can see it without asking.

A real teacher, usually within 24 hours

When a topic will not click, the student types the question or attaches a photo of their work in the course chat. A MusoLearn teacher replies, usually within 24 hours. No booking a lesson.

Common questions

Before you start

Is MusoLearn suitable for AMEB Theory of Music preparation?

Yes. Level 1 is for students sitting Grade 1, through to Level 5 for Grade 5. Always check the current AMEB syllabus for the exam you are entering. MusoLearn is not affiliated with, endorsed by, or approved by AMEB. It is an independent course provider that does not enrol students in AMEB exams and does not set or mark them.

What happens after the 3-day trial?

You have full access during the trial, which runs for 3 days from sign-up; the exact end time is shown at checkout. Unless you cancel online before it ends, the Annual subscription starts at A$349 for the year and renews at A$349 each year until you cancel. You can cancel online at any time; access then runs to the end of the paid year. If you continue and then change your mind, the 14-day money-back guarantee below applies. Tip: start the trial on a day the student has 15 minutes free, so the 3 days count.

Is there a money-back guarantee?

Yes. If you continue past the free trial and MusoLearn is not right for you, contact us through the Contact page within 14 days of your first payment and we will refund it in full. See the Terms for details.

How long does a level take?

Level 1 has 11 lessons, Levels 2 and 3 have 18 each, and Levels 4 and 5 have 22 to 24. Each lesson is a 3–7 minute video, quizzes are auto-marked along the way, and every level has printable worksheets with answers. At two or three lessons a week, that is roughly four to twelve weeks, leaving time to revise before the exam.

Can a parent see progress?

Yes. The student dashboard shows which lessons are complete and every quiz score. Log in to the student’s account and you can check progress without having to ask.

Which level should I start at?

Start at the level for the AMEB grade you are preparing for. If you have not done any theory before, or are unsure, take the free placement quiz. Membership includes every level, so you can change at any time.

My child is doing Grade 6, 7 or 8 practical. Which theory grade do they need?

AMEB sets a written co-requisite of Grade 2 for Grade 6 practical, Grade 3 for Grade 7, Grade 4 for Grade 8 and Certificate of Performance, and Grade 5 for AMusA. Theory of Music, Musicianship or Music Craft all satisfy it. For the Theory of Music route, the suitable MusoLearn level is Level 2, 3, 4 or 5. “For Leisure” subjects are exempt. Check the current AMEB Manual of Syllabuses for exactly when it must be completed.

How is the AMEB theory exam sat? Does MusoLearn run it?

AMEB runs its Theory of Music exams itself. Online exam sessions are offered for Grades 1–5, and the format is set by AMEB, so check AMEB for current options. The syllabus MusoLearn follows is the same regardless of format. MusoLearn helps students prepare with video lessons, auto-marked quizzes and printable exam-style worksheets. It does not enrol students in the exam, set it, run it or mark it.

Does MusoLearn cover AMEB Theory Grade 6 or diplomas?

No. MusoLearn Music Theory currently covers Levels 1–5, suitable for students preparing for AMEB Theory of Music Grades 1–5.

Does it help with the aural tests in the practical exam?

Membership includes MusoLearn’s aural training courses (interval, rhythm and pitch recognition) and the full Interval Trainer game. They support the aural section of practical exams alongside your instrumental teacher’s preparation.

Does it work on an iPad or phone?

Yes. MusoLearn works in any browser and in the MusoLearn app on iPhone, iPad, Android, Windows and Mac. Lessons can be paused, replayed and played at a faster speed, so students can learn anytime, anywhere.

How does course chat work?

Students type a question or attach a photo of their work from inside the course. A MusoLearn teacher replies in the chat, usually within 24 hours.

Is it for children or adults?

Both. Most students are school-aged and preparing for an exam, often with a parent keeping an eye on progress. Adult learners and instrumental teachers also use it to refresh or teach theory.

Can I buy one level only?

Yes. Individual course memberships are available if you only need one MusoLearn level. Prices vary by level. Most students find Annual better value because it includes every level plus aural training and piano technique.
